YouTube Eases Monetization Eligibility, Expands Shopping Affiliate Program

YouTube is making significant changes to its YouTube Partner Program (YPP), lowering the requirements for creators to access monetization tools. The new eligibility criteria include having 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours in the past year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days. This is a significant shift from the previous requirements of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Creators who meet these new thresholds can apply to join the YPP and gain access to various monetization tools such as Super Thanks, Super Chat, Super Stickers, channel memberships, and YouTube Shopping. The latter allows creators to promote their own merchandise.

The updated eligibility criteria will initially be applied in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea, with plans to expand to other countries where the YPP is available.

In addition to these changes, YouTube is expanding its Shopping affiliate program to more U.S.-based creators. Those already in the YPP with more than 20,000 subscribers will be able to tag products in their videos and Shorts and earn a commission.

These changes come as part of YouTube’s ongoing efforts to provide more monetization opportunities for creators, particularly those creating Shorts. The company had previously introduced ad revenue sharing for Shorts and announced Creator Music, a tool for artists to earn money from the use of their music in videos. More details about these new programs are expected to be revealed at the upcoming VidCon conference.
