TikTok’s “Gimme The Mic”: A New Platform for Aspiring Artists
TikTok, the globally renowned social media platform, has recently unveiled its plans for a virtual talent show titled “Gimme The Mic”. This event is designed to spotlight and reward budding artists, offering them an opportunity to clinch up to 500,000 Diamond rewards.
The “Gimme The Mic” event is scheduled for September. From now until August 16, TikTok users aged 18 and above can sign up on the audition page within the app. Entrants are required to upload a video of at least 30 seconds, tagged with #GimmeTheMic. The platform has set specific guidelines for the audition, emphasizing that the content should be original and should not contain explicit material or promote substances.
From the initial auditions, TikTok will shortlist 30 participants who will then advance to the Semi-Final round from September 1-3. During this phase, contestants will be paired up and will have to showcase multi-guest live videos on the @tiktoklive_us account. Fans will have the power to vote for their preferred performances in real-time.
The climax of the event will be the U.S. Grand Finale on September 10, where the top ten contestants will battle it out. The champion of this round will be crowned the U.S. Gimme The Mic champion and will be awarded 50,000 Diamond rewards. Following this, a Global Finale will be held on September 22 and 23, featuring contestants from across the globe. The global winner will receive a trophy, up to 500,000 Diamond rewards, and a chance to be showcased on TikTok’s official channels.
This initiative by TikTok is reminiscent of popular reality TV talent shows and aims to provide a platform for emerging music creators. TikTok has historically been a significant player in the music promotion arena, with its roots tracing back to Musical.ly, which was acquired by ByteDance in 2017. The platform has been instrumental in catapulting many songs to viral status and discovering new artists. A testament to this is the story of Tai Verdes, a 27-year-old artist whose song “Stuck in the Middle” gained immense popularity on TikTok.
In line with its commitment to music, TikTok has been introducing various programs and services. The recent launch of “Elevate” aims to assist up-and-coming artists in the music industry. Additionally, the platform has rolled out “TikTok Music”, a subscription-based music streaming service, in several countries.
