Shopify Unveils Sidekick: A ChatGPT-like Tool for Ecommerce Merchants

Shopify, a leading e-commerce platform, has announced the launch of a new AI tool named Sidekick at its bi-annual Editions conference. This tool is designed to provide e-commerce merchants with a range of AI-powered services, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but specifically tailored for e-commerce use cases.

Shopify has been investing heavily in generative AI, expanding its AI brand, Shopify Magic, to offer a wider range of services. The new features include providing personalized responses to customers based on their conversation histories and store policies, generating blog posts, product descriptions, and marketing email content.

The head of product for AI at Shopify, Miqdad Jaffer, explained that the new capabilities are powered by a combination of proprietary Shopify data, including merchant business data, and large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Importantly, the data and conversations are not shared with third parties.

Sidekick, the highlight of Shopify’s announcements, is a conversational AI assistant that understands and interprets questions related to business decision-making. It can answer queries like “How do I set up a discount for a holiday sale?” or “Help me segment my customers so I can better engage them in my marketing.” It can also perform tasks like summarizing information across sales documents and conducting basic product research.

In addition to these features, Sidekick can modify Shopify merchant shop designs, add product collections to a home page, suggest themes and copy for a hero banner, and more. It is designed to be a comprehensive tool that can assist merchants in various aspects of their e-commerce business.

Given the potential for AI to generate content that may be inaccurate or biased, Shopify has implemented safety measures. Merchants are given the opportunity to review content generated by Magic before it goes live. Furthermore, Shopify’s AI features are not allowed to write or make changes to any Shopify production systems.

Jaffer emphasized Shopify’s commitment to making the power of AI accessible to businesses of all sizes. He believes that there is no corner of the internet that will benefit more from AI than people building and growing their own businesses. With tools like Sidekick, Shopify aims to continually evolve and tailor its services to meet the needs of its merchants.
