Patagonia Provisions: Pioneering Sustainable Craft Beer with Kernza Grain

Patagonia, a renowned name in outdoor wear, is making a significant stride in the craft beer industry. The company’s food and beverage line, Patagonia Provisions, is partnering with 11 acclaimed breweries across the United States to produce unique beers using a sustainable grain called Kernza. This initiative is part of Patagonia’s commitment to organic and regenerative ingredients, a focus that has been central to Patagonia Provisions since its inception in 2012.

Patagonia Provisions: Pioneering Sustainable Craft Beer with Kernza GrainKernza, a perennial whole grain harvested from wheatgrass, is the star ingredient in these new beer releases. The grain is not only sustainable but also beneficial for the environment. It requires minimal tilling, improves soil health and water-holding capacity, and can draw more carbon from the air into the ground than annual grains. This makes it a powerful tool in the fight against climate change.

The breweries involved in this project include well-known names such as Russian River Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Allagash, and Maui Brewing. Each brewery will create its own unique beer using Kernza, adding a nutty richness to the traditionally predictable lager style. The inaugural batch of Kernza lager is brewed with certified organic grain from A-Frame Farm, a 1,200-acre operation out of Madison, Minnesota.

The beers, co-branded by Patagonia and each brewery, will be available in their respective localities for a limited run. Participating breweries will also contribute 1% of their Patagonia beer sales to local nonprofits supporting environmental initiatives, with Patagonia matching these donations.

This initiative by Patagonia Provisions is a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. It’s a win for craft beer lovers, the environment, and the future of sustainable brewing.
