The fact of the matter is there is no “Yelp” page to help determine which recruiter is a good fit for you. The first step to take in your search is to ask your personal network if there’s a recruiting firm or an individual recruiter they would recommend. A good recruiter will want to do good work that people talk about. Because, if a recruiter does right by their client, it could open more doors for them down the road.
However, what is important to realize is if someone refers you just one specific person, but there is a caveat and a bad reputation for the rest of the agency, that’s the first red flag. It is possible that there is a “needle in the haystack” in the recruiter that works for an agency with a poor reputation.
You’ll want to consider asking a recruiter some specific questions to test his or her respective credibility and industry knowledge.
Here are some important questions to ask a recruiter in that initial conversation:
- What the interview process is for each job?
- What questions can I expect to be asked?
- Whom will I be speaking with?
- Why is the position is open?
- How long has the position been open?
- Why am I a good fit for the position you reached out to me for?
- What are some reasons that other candidates haven’t been selected?
Good recruiters are experts in their field so once you do feel like you have found someone that is a good fit for you – trust them. Have confidence in your decision in picking them because you did your homework before you made the decision. They are here to guide you on your path to career success. In order to do that, they have to understand how you got to where you are today and know where you want to be in the future.
