Another One Bites the Dust: Google Hangouts Is Officially Shutting Down

Google Hangouts, the popular messaging app built into Gmail, is officially being shut down today. The app, which was first released in 2013, is being replaced by Google Chat – the company’s Slack-like instant messaging app for businesses.

Starting today, November 1, the Google Hangouts web app is no longer available. The Android and iOS apps died in July of this year. While most of the messages and contacts will be automatically transferred over to Google Chat, all of the data won’t migrate to Google Chat.

Users have until January 2023 to keep their Hangouts data. So if you’re a Hangouts user, be sure to download and save a copy of your data before it’s gone for good!

Instead of Hangouts, try Google Chat! It’s the new messaging app from Google that has all of your favorite Hangouts features – and more! Google Chat is available on Android, iOS, and the web.

Chat provides tools that Hangouts does not, such as security and collaboration features like Spaces and editing Docs, Slides, or Sheets alongside other users. Chatters can also send GIFs and @mention others in the group conversation to notify them.
