Amazon Temporarily Pauses Hiring For Corporate Roles Amid Worsening Economic Outlook

Amazon announced that it is pausing hiring for roles in its corporate workforce. The company said it made the decision amid a worsening economic outlook and after it hired rapidly in recent years.

In a memo, Amazon’s HR chief Beth Galetti wrote that the company is suspending new hiring due to a worsening economic outlook and because it has hired rapidly in years past. “We think this pause will last for a few months but we will monitor the economy and business closely to see when would be the best time to adjust,” she said.

The retail giant went on a hiring spree during the Covid-19 pandemic as it sought to keep up with a pandemic-driven surge in online shopping. Since then, it has moved to backfill roles and continue hiring in targeted areas. However, the latest move affects all of Amazon’s businesses, not just retail.

Galetti said that the company will continue to backfill roles to replace employees who leave for new opportunities and that it will “hire people incrementally” in some targeted places. She added that Amazon is committed to helping employees who are impacted by the hiring freeze.

The news comes as Amazon faces increased scrutiny from lawmakers and workers over its treatment of employees. Earlier this week, Amazon announced that it was raising its minimum wage to $15 per hour, but some workers have said that the company does not do enough to protect them from injury or harassment.
