Cooling Off: UCSD to Lead $6.6 Million NSF Study on Impact of Extreme SoCal Heat Waves

University of California San Diego (UCSD) has been awarded a $6.6 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to study the human impact of extreme heat waves.

The grants will fund research hubs in Southern California and Puerto Rico, with a focus on the human impact of extreme heat waves and their potential effects on climate change.

This is an important step in preparing for the future, as global warming continues to cause more extreme weather conditions. UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography will be leading the Southern California research hub, while anthropologist Isabel Rivera-Collazo directs the project focused on Puerto Rico.

The research will be conducted in the following phases:

The first research theme will incorporate observations and models of air-sea interactions during marine and terrestrial heat waves to more accurately describe past and future coastal cloud variability.

The second research theme will investigate the various health problems caused by extreme heat. Unfortunately, not everyone is affected equally by extreme heat strokes—there are significant differences between population subgroups and neighborhoods. For instance, people’s access to green space plays a role in how susceptible they are to heat waves. By analyzing the heat vulnerability of Southern California populations, researchers hope to come up with measures that may help control the threat.

Lastly, a third research topic will explore how water resource management and green spaces work together in populated areas of coastal Southern California. This includes urban greening, which is a strategy that communities can use to adapt to climate change and heat waves. However, this may be complicated by the shortage of water in California.

The goal of this research is to provide results that will guide planning strategies for heat adaptation in Southern California and Puerto Rico. This is a vital step in preparing for the future as climate change continues to cause extreme weather conditions.
